POSTCARDS – CASTLES OF SAN MARINO

The Republic is enclosed in ancient walls, and is made up of nine Castles, each of which represents a district and has its own coat of arms. This set of postcards is a virtual tour of views and impressions of a territory that is unknown to the majority of people, expressed in pictorial impressions that make each postcard a little print to collect. The process for the production of the postcards starts with a first stage consisting of a visit to the zone, in search of the views, buildings, monuments and elements that characterize the Castle. All the elements have been merged picturially by the author, to give the subject an immediate visual impact summarizing the recognizable features of each Castle. The recurring element for all the postcards is the background with the Three Towers of the coat of arms of San Marino. At the beginning and end of the set is a succinct representation of the territory of the Republic, showing the outlines of each castle’s district and the coat of arms. In the background, the flag of San Marino. The pictorial technique used by Irio Ottavio Fantini is mixed: he uses ink with coloring in watercolored distemper. A quick, sure line with tenuous chromatic fields meant to suggest a warm atmosphere.
