WORKS OF ART IN SAN MARINO 3

The third part of the issues devoted to the works of art in San Marino celebrates three paintings located in the State Museum. The 2 Euro card reproduces the oil on canvas of “St. John the Baptist” by Bernardo Strozzi. The painting, donated by Carlo Curie, was recently restored (2003), and is located at the State Museum of San Marino, room VII. The 4 Euro card reproduces a detail of the 16th century polyptych painted by an artist from Forlì, Francesco Menzocchi, (1502-1574) and found among the ruins of the Ancient parish church of San Marino. It was a very large polyptych, consisting of nine paintings: at the center the Holy Family and a cherub, with San Marino and St. Mary Magdalene at the sides. In the predella, Jesus carried to the sepulcher with the Archangel Gabriel and the Annunciation at the sides; at the top, the Nativity and the Presentation at the Temple. Above it, Jesus arguing with the elders. The polyptych is presented in the frame ordered in 1866 from the painter Luigi Cocchetti, who had also restored the painting. The polyptych has been restored many times, the last in 1986. The work is located in the State Museum of San Marino, in room VII. The 5 Euro card reproduces an oil on canvas of San Filippo Neri by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino. The painting comes from the chapel of the former Belluzzi school, and was painted in the 17th century. It depicts the saint kneeling, with his arms outspread and face turned upwards with an expression of resignation, wonder and ecstasy. It is an inspiring painting in which the simple gesture of the figure, exalted by the combination of colors and their luminosity, creates a profoundly solemn yet poignant atmosphere. The angels, the dove and the lily around the saint are painted with loving detail, and express a mysterious symbolism, a bond of poetry, sensitivity and devotion that are transmitted to the viewer. The work is located in the State Museum in room VII.
