26th January 2012 Tribute to the Coat of Arms

Independence and Sovereignty. With the issuing of three stamps, designed by the graphic design and architecture agency “Esploratori dello Spazio”, and featuring photos by Davide Farabegoli, the AASFN pays its tribute to the San Marino coat of arms. A representation of culture and identity intended to pay homage to a Republic and its people. In it are contained the résumé, synthesis and symbolic representation of that set of ideal values which constituted and continue to function as a driving force for the citizens of that tiny State. “Libertas”, liberty, is the key word which impels collective action and for centuries has been written in the cartouche under the shield. As far back as the XV century, when San Marino took on the title of Republic, it already stood proud above the country’s entrance gateway. To announce to aggressors that those men on the ramparts were not defending caste privileges but the right to be free. And then there are the three battlemented towers crowned by their banners perched on Mount Titano, which, together with the figure of the Founding Saint, embody the population’s sense of belonging. Hence the sheet created intends to travel a long historical route also via the images of some coats of arms which are amongst the most significant in the history of the Republic, and through a depiction of the new coat of arms taken from the Constitutional Law of 22 July 2011 no.1. The colours of the three stamps have been altered from their official use. Gold leaf, like that to be used solely for the headed notepaper of the Captains Regent, silver as used by the Secretaries of State, and the blue used by the State’s public offices. A tribute to the coat of arms, and a tribute to Liberty, Independence and Sovereignty.
