station and continued with the digging of Montale tunnel, the first among the 17 necessary ones to reach the plain. The 32 km long railway had two sights: mount and sea and it went from an altitude of 2,65 m in Rimini Marina beach to 643 m in San Marino.” (from the book of Gian Guido Turchi – Rimini- San Marino by train - published by ETR Editrice Trasporti su Rotaie). It had a short life: twelve years. The cover wants to remember that railway which joined Rimini to the tiny Republic of San Marino. It was damaged during the war and made its last trip on the 26th July 1944 with a train which carried evacuees from Rimini. From that year no more direct railways have been activated. After eighteen years the “trenino biancoazzurro” (light blue and white little train) still draws attention. This cover honours the historical value of the old electric train which now is going to be restored and the tunnels which will be opened to the public and completed by didactic ways. A blast from the past and a dream called “back to future” as wished by the Italy-San Marino associations dedicated to the old railway. Many projects are on the way and the Philately issues an old days “cover”.Issue date 26th May 2012, Values a printed stamp of € 0,60, Print run n. 50.000, Paper White print-paper 100gr/mq, Six-colour offset included fluorescent ink for recto, one-colour offset for internal side Printing by Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato S.p.A.
