Gold Diptyque - PROOF – “San Marino architectural elements” 2012

Borgo Maggiore. It’s the second Castle as for inhabitants of the Republic of San Marino. It was founded in the 12th Century, the suburb was called “Mercatale”. It was there that markets and exhibitions took place. Today it is still a significant shopping center and every Thursday there is the market very popular among the inhabitants. The name “Borgo Maggiore” comes from the fact that once upon a time, within the ancient Gualdaria that included the Capital, it was the greatest and more populated suburb. Among the most interesting and important places there is Piazza Grande, the clock tower and the Suffrage Church. The 20 euro gold coin, part of the diptyque designed by Uliana Pernazza, is part of the Dipthyque that celebrates the ancient fountain which is in front of the square. The 50 euro gold coin could be called a masterpiece into a masterpiece. On the foreground, in fact, there is the reproduction of the sculpture of the Sammarinese artist Leonardo Blanco, which is placed on the traffic circle of Borgo Maggiore. “Different/Equal” is the title of the theme, very well represented by the conjunction of the two big steal semicircles which form the sculpture: one reflects itself into the other, different and it fulfills itself with the other. Dialogue between cultures and populations that in the coin fulfills itself with the “Piazza Grande” (once called Square Ignazio Belzoppi, 1762-1828. Man of letters and poet), where there are little shops, and the “Torre Civica or Torre dell’Orologio” – Clock Tower - built in 1896 from the Architect Azzurri of Rome.
