2 Scudi gold coin proof 2016 “Architecture in San Marino: Sanctuary of our lady of Consolation by G. Michelucci”

The church was built by the Italian architect Giovanni Michelucci starting from February 1964. The church was consecrated on June 11, 1967. The building is trapezoidal in plan, irregular, with a series of internal pathways revolving around the main courtroom, which is located about four meters under the street level. The entrance is through a narthex, from which two paths branch: one leading to the women's gallery and the other, via an indoor staircase, following the parvis and leading to the the lower churchyard. The roof is made up of two lawyers leaning against parabolic arches. According to critics, these spaces represent some themes dear to Michelucci, which had already been represented in the famous Church of the Motorway del Sole. The church is not an isolated building, but it is integrated into a wider environment, open to the surrounding area. The sanctuary is designed as a place for the community, for social relationships, as a kind of small town where to promote inner discourse and outer dialogue.
