Issue 1996

The 1996 "Europa" issue, dedicated to famous women, will feature a painting of Mother Theresa of Calcutta, by Gina Lollobrigida, who besides being an actress is also an Artist.
Gina Lollobrigida, in the eyes of the world, was the symbol of the Italian woman. A tenacious woman of many talents, she remains one of the last myths of cinema in the world. She found fame in her portrayal of beautiful stormy women in may successful films, such as:-"Fanfan the Tulipe", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Achtung! Bandits!", "The Country Wife" and "Woman of Rome". With the film "Bread, Love and Dreams", she earned accolades both from the critics and from the public. She received numerous awards both in Italy and abroad.
In 1992 when she published a book of photographs she decided to donate the proceeds to Mother Theresa of Calcutta, stating that: "this woman embodies the Christina message and while possessing great strenght of character she is incredibily sweet".
Mother Theresa is known throughout the world for her humanitarian works and for this reason, on the proposal of Gina Lollobrigida, the sum of 32,000,000 Lira (20,000 dollars) will be assigned to her, for her work in favour of the needy.
It has often been rightly stated that collecting stamps is a cultural activity but with this issue the Philatelic Corporation of San Marino also proposes the idea of solidarity and is very grateful to all Collectors who in ordering the set will contribute to this venture.
